Reflexology

Simply put, reflexology is an ancient Chinese technique that uses pressure-point massage on the feet and hands to restore the flow of energy through out the entire body.

Reflexology is a therapeutic method of relieving pain by stimulating predefined pressure points on the feet and hands.

This controlled pressure alleviates the source of the discomfort.

In the absence of any particular malady or abnormality, reflexology may be as effective for promoting good health and for preventing illness as as it may be for relieving symptoms of stress, injury, and illness.

Reflexologists work from maps of predefined pressure points that are located on the hands and feet.

These pressure points are reputed to connect directly through the nervous system and affect the bodily organs and glands.

The reflexologist manipulates the pressure points according to specific techniques of reflexology therapy.

By means of this touching therapy, any part of the body that is the source of pain, illness, or potential debility can be strengthened through the application of pressure at the respective hand or foot location.

Reflexology promotes healing by stimulating the nerves in the body and encouraging the flow of blood.

In the process, reflexology not only quells the sensation of pain, but relieves the source of the pain as well.

Desired long-term effects of reflexology include reduced stress and induced relaxation, feeling of increased energy, relief from acute and chronic conditions, relief from stress related conditions, cure for sleeping disorders, sports injury, preventative therapy, improvement of mental alertness, stimulation of creativity and productivity, and improving inner-relationships between body systems.

Benefits of Reflexology include:

*Stress reduction

When we are stressed our body's defences break down and we become more susceptible to illness and disease.  Reflexology reduces stress by generating deep tranquil relaxation, helping the body balance itself and allowing healing energy to flow.

*Improved circulation

Blood needs to flow freely throughout the body carrying oxygen and nutrients to all the cells and removing the waste products of metabolism and other toxins.  By reducing stress and tension, reflexology allows the cardiovascular vessels to conduct the flow of blood naturally and easily.

*Stimulated nerve function

By stimulating more than 7,000 nerves in the feet, reflexology encourages the opening and clearing of neural pathways.  It interrupts pain pathways, reducing pain.

*Improved immune system

Reflexology stimulates the lymphatic system thus reducing risk of infection.  It cleanses the body of toxins and impurities and also stimulates the production of endorphins, leading to an improved immune system and sense of well-being.

*Increased energy

Reflexology revitalises energy throughout the body by relaxing and opening up energy pathways.

Remedial massage

Remedial massage involves soft tissue manipulation to prevent and treat muscle injuries, pain and soreness.

A Remedial Massage practitioner has the ability to provide a comprehensive treatment plan based on their ability to determine the underlying cause of many musculoskeletal problems.

When muscles and tendons become damaged or injured, knotted and tense or strained, Remedial Massage provides a healing treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow.  Remedial Massage holistically treats the whole body and traces the discomfort as far as possible back to the original cause, thus healing both the cause of the disorder therefore reducing or eliminating symptoms.

Key benefits of Remedial Massage include: The stimulation to the blood supply allowing toxins in the muscles to be removed; The calming of the peripheral nervous system to ease pain and discomfort; and the toning and relaxing of muscles to improve joint mobility.  An improvement to the health of the cells, the repairing of tissues, and the easing of stiffness and tension can also be experienced through therapeutic relaxation.

Muscular and skeletal dysfunctions often addressed with Remedial Massage include tension headaches, overuse syndromes, sports injuries such as rotator cuff strains, whiplash, fibromyalgia and low back pain.

Deep Tissue Therapy

One of the most effective of the soft tissue therapies deep tissue massage as the name suggests targets the deep tissues and provides longer term relief and correction of muscles and other soft tissue injuries.  Clients having deep tissue massage are seeking to treat more specific conditions or complaints and will feel the therapeutic difference

Myofascial Release

A gentle blend of stretching and massage, myofascial release therapy uses hands-on manipulation of the entire body to promote healing and relieve pain.  Remedial Massage therapists use the technique to ease pressure in the fibrous bands of connective tissue, or fascia, that hold together muscles throughout the body.  Injuries or damage to the fascia result in disruptions and irregularities to the tissue and are believed to be a source of pain and restricted motion.  Gentle stretching and long massage strokes aim to realign the damaged tissue allowing for optimal healing.

Trigger Point Therapy

This technique applies concentrated finger, thumb or even elbow pressure to a “trigger point” [painful, irritated areas within the muscle belly] to break cycles of spasm and pain.  When a muscle is over stretched or strained through injury or postural constraint it will develop nodules or concentrated areas of contracted muscle called trigger points.

Trigger point therapy involves placing pressure on that trigger point so that the muscle can relax and the pain can be lessened.  This form of therapy is often followed by stretching the muscles.

Pain is usually characterised by local tenderness but may have a referral pattern.  Focused pressure to the area for approximately 30 seconds is used to break cycles of spasm and pain within soft tissue structures.

Benefits include:

Releasing constricted areas in the muscles thus alleviating pain.

Receiving massage with trigger point therapy on a regular basis can help naturally manage pain and stress from chronic injuries.

Better mobility and flexibility

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage [MLD] is a type of gentle massage.

MLD is an advanced form of massage that aims to stimulate the lymphatic system to remove congestion and stagnation from within the body, and so help it return to a healthy condition.  MLD therapy utilizes gentle massage strokes that remove blockages and promotes proper lymph flow.  This is important because it is the primary function of the lymph system to defend the body against disease by cleansing, detoxifying and nourishing the body’s tissues.  Thus, when the lymph system is blocked, toxins and plasma may accumulate causing interference with cell nourishment and depressing the immune system.

MLD may assist in the prevention and remedy of some chronic conditions e.g:

Pain; joint swelling, muscular pain, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, migraine, and chronic headaches.

Skin; cellulite, aids in weight loss

Stress, chronic fatigue syndrome, lethargy effective component in the treatment and control of lymphoedema, promotes healing of wounds and burns and improves the appearance of old scars, minimises or reduces stretch marksand promotes the healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains and lessens pain.

MLD is often incorporated into the treatment and control of Lymphoedema.

Benefits include:

*Stimulates the lymphatic system that will rid the body of waste material, promote healing and boost the immune system.

*It has a calming effect on both the mind and the body giving you a complete sense of wellness after each treatment.
